The surprise is that there is no surprise this year: The Ferrari SF-23 will be followed by the Ferrari SF-24 at the Scuderia in the 2024 Formula 1 season
The new Ferrari for the 2024 Formula 1 season will be unveiled on February 13. Around two weeks beforehand, the Scuderia has already revealed what the new car will be called. The car, which was internally codenamed 676, will officially be called the Ferrari SF-24.
At first glance, the name seems logical, as the predecessor was called SF-23. However, this is actually the first time in six years that Ferrari has simply “counted up” the name of its car. The last time this was the case was in 2018, when the SF70H was followed by the SF71H.
So the surprise in 2024 is that there is no surprise, because no other team is as creative as the Scuderia when it comes to naming its cars. The first car in the hybrid era was called the F14 T in 2014, with the “F” standing for Ferrari, the “14” for the year and “T” for turbo.
The name was changed slightly in 2015 with the SF15-T, with the designation “SF” standing for Scuderia Ferrari ever since. The SF16-H followed in 2016, marking the next small change. The “T” for turbo was now replaced by “H” for hybrid.
In 2017, the naming changed completely with the aforementioned SF70H, with the “70” standing for the 70th anniversary of Ferrari as a car manufacturer. The SF71H a year later was followed in 2019 by the next completely different name, the SF90.
This time, the change was made to mark the 90th birthday of the Scuderia, which was founded in 1929. The hybrid suffix in the name was dropped in this context and has not returned since then.
New year, New name.

2020 was followed by the SF1000, this time alluding to Ferrari’s 1000th Formula 1 race. 2021 saw a return to a more classic naming scheme with the SF21, but the next “outlier” followed in 2022 with the F1-75.
This time, the background was the 75th anniversary of Ferrari as a car manufacturer, with the “SF” in the name surprisingly being dropped for the first time since 2014 and a clear reference to Formula 1 being made with “F1” instead.
In 2023, the Scuderia then returned to the more traditional naming convention with the SF-23, which will now be retained in 2024
