Coach question at 1860: Gorenzel talks “not about, but with Köllner”

The TSV 1860 Munich has conceded two bitter defeats within four days. “Served” afterwards was not only coach Michael Köllner, who probably does not have to fear for his job after the 2:5 against Magdeburg.

0:5 goals, hardly any chances and many mistakes in their own defence: It was already clear after one half that the Munich Lions were absolutely penniless in their home match against leaders 1. FC Magdeburg in front of a ghostly crowd. In the end, a 2:5 defeat was on the scoreboard – after the 1:3 against Waldhof Mannheim, the next quite clear defeat against a promotion aspirant.

Everything that could go wrong did go wrong in the first half.

“Really served,” was how coach Köllner described his state of mind afterwards on “MagentaSport”, the Löwen were therefore. “Everything that can go wrong went wrong in the first half: You miss clear chances, you miss a penalty, you don’t defend well.” Moreover, every shot on goal by Magdeburg “felt like a goal”. “It was bad from all players in the first half,” the 1860 coach summed up his team’s performance mercilessly before the interval whistle.

Up until 0:3 – mind you, in the 17th minute – Köllner had even been thinking positively because of the openness of the game. “Because it was an open game, but the 0:4  knocked us out.” In short: “The very biggest crap is how it came about in the first half. “

Gorenzel criticises failed game idea – and explains how to “get things under control “

The fact that the Löwen’s performance was by no means successful was also known to sporting director Günther Gorenzel. He also criticised the tactical arrangement of the team. The idea of playing “very man-oriented” and “running Magdeburg very high” simply did not work. Based on the performance of the players, it was also noticeable “that defensively and offensively everything went wrong”. Especially in the work at the back, very little worked.

Nevertheless, Gorenzel made one thing clear: “You will certainly understand that I am not talking about Michel Köllner at the moment, but with Michel Köllner. That is crucial in order to get these things under control,” he replied to a question. After the weak week, everyone was disappointed, of course, but to pin the situation on the coach would be wrong, according to Gorenzel. The whole collective had failed. Especially in the first 45 minutes against Magdeburg.
