“Cherry on top”: Sinner on the verge of an almost perfect season

With Italy, the world number one could also win the Davis Cup after three Grand Slam titles.

The coronation in sight: Tennis star Jannik Sinner can top off a highly successful season with Italy in the Davis Cup final on Sunday. “Of course that would be the cherry on the cake,” said Sinner ahead of the final against the Netherlands on Sunday : “I’ve achieved a lot this year, but try not to take anything for granted.”

The Netherlands, who knocked Germany out of the tournament in the semi-finals, do not want to underestimate the world number one, despite his team’s clear role as favorites: “It will be a tough game. Especially in the Davis Cup, you never know what can happen,” said Sinner. Defending champion Italy had previously defeated the 28-time Australian champions 2-0 in the semi-finals.

Sinner leads the world rankings at the end of an extremely strong year. He triumphed in three Grand Slam tournaments and the ATP Finals in 2024, only at the French Open did he have to let his rival Carlos Alcaraz take the lead. As successful as Sinner’s season was on the sporting side of things, it was complicated off the court.

The smoldering doping case against the Italian is not yet closed. The next step is a hearing at the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). In September, WADA announced that it had appealed to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against Sinner’s acquittal after two positive tests for the banned steroid clostebol in March.
