Chemnitz’s fifth straight league win in a row has closed the gap in the German Basketball League (BBL) to the leading duo of Bayern and Ulm – and ruined Oldenburg’s new coach Mladen Drijencic’s comeback. Braunschweig’s offense fell apart in Würzburg.
Europe Cup winner Niners Chemnitz has turned the leading duo into a leading trio in the BBL. The Saxons celebrated their fifth league win in a row with a 87:78 (46:39) victory over EWE Baskets Oldenburg and drew level with the leading former champions ratiopharm Ulm and defending champions Bayern Munich.
In Chemnitz, the home side only managed to secure a win in the final period, the day after Ulm suffered a 88:96 defeat at the hands of struggling former champions Alba Berlin. Apart from the opening quarter, Oldenburg also led intermittently after the break.
The top scorer for Niners coach Rodrigo Pastore’s team was the American DeAndre Lansdowne with 28 points, who thus also spoiled the comeback of head coach Mladen Drijencic on the Oldenburg sidelines. Justin Jaworski stood out in Oldenburg’s team with 27 points.
Braunschweig’s offense is falling apart
Meanwhile, Würzburg Baskets and former Champions League winner Telekom Baskets Bonn remained in the top third of the table. Würzburg defeated Löwen Braunschweig 70-53 (42-22) – the visitors from Braunschweig made just 31.2 percent of their field goals and a weak 2-for-20 from beyond the arc – and Bonn came out on top 69-64 (27-35) in an early game at Rostock Seawolves.
