Gonzalo Higuain headed home from the World Cup last week, as Argentina crashed out to France. They had never really looked too convincing in the tournament as they drew with Iceland and lost 3-0 to Croatia; it was luck really that took them through to the next round. Now he can concentrate on his club future amid rumours linking him to a move to Chelsea.
Ronaldo bid from Juventus
Juventus surprised the football world yesterday as news emerged that they made a €100m bid for Cristiano Ronaldo, who also suffered an early exit from the World Cup. If Ronaldo does move to Juventus, then someone will have to make way and many people think that it will be Higuain that moves on as a consequence.
Could Higuain join former manager Sarri?
His scoring ability is not at the level it once was and Juventus are looking for some added firepower to strengthen their team. It is thought that the appointment of new Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri will be enough to convince Higuain that he should join Chelsea. The two worked together at Napoli, in a season where Higuain managed his highest ever goal tally.
However, his agent has announced that the player is currently happy at Juventus. Perhaps this will change once Sarri has been officially appointed the manager at Stamford Bridge and there is still a lot longer to go in the transfer window.
With big name strikers that command large fees, transfers usually happen as a consequence of another. So if Morata moves on from Chelsea, there will be the requirement for another experienced striker to come in. If Juventus do get their man and manage to sign Ronaldo then Higuain will find his opportunities more limited at Juventus, so the transfer will hinge on what other business happens around the football transfer market.
