Chelsea pay €20m for Anselmino – and loan him back to Boca

Chelsea FC have once again invested tens of millions of euros in a new player: However, talented defender Aaron Anselmino (19) is not expected to feature for the Blues until next summer at the earliest

Chelsea FC’s oft-cited “Loan Army” has gained one more player. The Blues announced on Thursday that Aaron Anselmino has been given a seven-year contract until June 30, 2031. However, the 19-year-old defender will immediately be loaned back to training club Boca Juniors, whom he joined at the age of twelve.

According to information from The Athletic, Chelsea will pay around 20 million euros for the talented defender, who is likely to meet his Argentinian compatriot Enzo Fernandez among others in London. A hefty price for a player who has only made ten professional appearances.

Anselmino was promoted to the professional ranks last January. The defender, who can also play in midfield, made his first big impression in the Copa Sudamericana. In the group stage of the competition, Anselmino scored the golden 1:0 against Sportivo Trinidense Asuncion.

Since Todd Boehly took over at Chelsea FC, the focus in transfer planning has increasingly turned to talent from South America. Just last June, the transfer of 17-year-old Estevao Willian, known as “Messinho” in his home country, became official. The Blues invested a base fee of 34 million euros for the attacking player, which is set to rise to around 50 million euros due to possible bonus payments. Anselmino already number 8 – Inter and ManCity are waiting

Anselmino is Chelsea’s eighth summer transfer, having previously convinced Tosin Adarabioyo, Caleb Wiley, Marc Guiu, Omari Kellyman, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Renato Veiga and Filip Jörgensen to move to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea will play their final test against Italian champions Inter Milan on Sunday (4pm) before the Premier League opener – against champions Man City, of all teams – on August 18. Anselmino will also be watching closely from faraway Argentina
