After an easing by the British government regarding sanctions imposed on Chelsea FC, the Premier League club is allowed to sell tickets again – at least for away games.
Despite an amended licence, ticket sales for home games remain ruled out for Chelsea FC, but fans will once again be allowed to accompany their team to away games in the Premier League as well as the Champions League and FA Cup due to the British government’s relaxation following sanctions imposed on Russian owner Roman Abramovich. Financial relief has also been approved, with £30 million flowing to the Blues through its parent company Fordstam Limited to cover costs.
Only season ticket holders and away fans will still be allowed at home league games. The Champions League winners face Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge in the quarter-final first leg in the top flight on 6 April and Crystal Palace in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley Stadium on 16 April. There are no longer any restrictions on sales in the Women’s Super League.
Proceeds go to victims of the Ukraine war
Revenue from ticket sales will be earmarked. According to the Premier League, all proceeds from ticket sales will be “donated to charity for the benefit of victims of the war in Ukraine”, following an agreement with Chelsea. Proceeds in other competitions will also not go to the club coached by Thomas Tuchel, but will be passed on to the relevant organisations such as UEFA, the FA or the respective away team in the league.
What remains unchanged is that Chelsea are not allowed to make any player transfers and generally earn any money. The strict measures against owner Abramovich had been imposed due to the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine and Abramovich’s alleged closeness to President Vladimir Putin.
