Five DTM drivers will swap their helmets for football boots on 24 August 2022 – The match will be played in honour of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher
In the run-up to the DTM round from 26 to 28 August 2022 at the Nürburgring, there will be a charity football match on 24 August in honour of Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher. Five DTM drivers will be taking part and wearing studded shoes instead of a helmet. The event will take place in Frankfurt’s Waldstadion and is an initiative of NBA star Dirk Nowitzki as well as Michael’s son Mick Schumacher, who competes for Haas in Formula 1.
This is the fourth edition of “Champions for Charity”, which last raised funds for a good cause in 2019. “Fun, games, excitement and doing something good at the same time, it couldn’t be more perfect,” says a delighted Frederic Elsner, who is responsible for events at the DTM organisation ITR. “It is an honour for us to be part of this great project.”
The DTM squad consists of the current DTM champion Maximilian Götz (Winward-Mercedes), Maro Engel (GruppeM-Mercedes), Kelvin van der Linde (Abt-Audi), Felipe Fraga (AF-Crose-Ferrari) and Le Mans winner and DTM team boss Timo Bernhard (Bernhard-Porsche). The racing drivers will meet professional footballers such as Lukas Podolski, Mats Hummels, Timo Werner, Rene Adler, Christoph Kramer and Florian Neuhaus.
Stars from the world of sport are represented as well as Formula 1 Managing Director Stefano Domenicali. “The fact that the DTM and some drivers are also supporting our ‘Champions for Charity’ game makes me very happy. We motor sportsmen would like to show the football players in Frankfurt what we can do on the pitch; after all, our speciality is the race track,” says Haas driver Schumacher.
Ex-basketballer and NBA star Nowitzki adds: “This will be another great event in honour of Michael Schumacher with many champions, numerous goals and a programme for the whole family. We are delighted that so many top athletes have confirmed their participation and are already working hard on the team line-ups.
