Champions Ulm picked up their fifth win in their sixth game of the season in the German Basketball League (BBL) on Saturday evening. Their closest pursuers Ludwigsburg suffered a surprise defeat against Vechta.
Ratiopharm Ulm has notched up its next victory in the BBL and consolidated its lead at the top of the table. The 2023 champions also won against Towers Hamburg on Saturday evening, beating them 82:72 (39:39), making it their fifth win in six games this season.
The win was all the more valuable because their pursuers stumbled: MLP Academics Heidelberg (4-3 wins) lost 67:72 (27:31) to Würzburg Baskets, while MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg (4-3) also lost their home game 77:79 (38:33) against Rasta Vechta. Ulm’s closest pursuer is now German champions Bayern Munich, who have won four of their six games.
Ulm risked losing their home game on Saturday after a very weak second period. A strong start had seen the two sides play evenly, with the visitors trailing by just 14:27. However, Ulm stabilized and went on to win comfortably, led by Justinian Jessup, who finished as the league leaders’ top scorer with 22 points.
