CBeebies World Anthem is Getting Young Fans Singing

What is a World Cup without a song to sing along with? There have been some great ones throughout the years, England fans of a certain age will remember ‘World in Motion’, a collaboration between New Order and some of the stars of the Italia 1990 World Cup Squad. If there is one part that really stands out, it is the John Barnes rapping section of the song. Who knew he was a star footballer and rapping genius?!

1998 saw ‘Vindaloo’ from Fat Les, which was a bit of a bizarre choice intended to parody the stereotypical football fan – the curry loving, beer drinking, hooligan types. Not sure it did anything to help the perception and with amazing lyrics like “We’re gonna score one more than you” it was hardly Ivor Novello material.

Probably the best yet is the Lightning Seeds with Baddiel and Skinner ‘Three Lions 98’, which was the official song for England going into that World Cup. Unfortunately, those 30 years of hurt have now reached 52 (since England won their last World Cup), which does not sound quite as catchy.

So without any official theme this year, the only one that seems to be gaining any attention is the CBeebies creation called ‘The Kick Song’. It was put together to try and get younger children interested in football in the lead up to the World Cup, giving them something to sing along to.

Parents may find it gets a little irritating after the third rendition of the ‘Kicky kicky kick kick’ that comprises the majority of the song’s lyrics. They were definitely trying to keep it simple and catchy with this one. It might remind you of the annoying Crazy Frog song that was so popular some years back.

So if you find yourself a bit stuck for songs to sing through this World Cup, you can download this catchy number from iTunes or Google Play.
