After more than nine years at Real Madrid, Manchester United have lured Casemiro to the Premier League. On Friday evening, the record-breaking champions announced an agreement.
Manchester United have pulled off a minor transfer coup just under two weeks before the end of the summer transfer window. The record champions got rid of veteran Casemiro (30) after a total of nine and a half years at the club from Real Madrid.
On Friday evening, the Red Devils announced that an agreement had been reached with the royals. According to the statement, the transfer was only pending contractual details with the player, visa requirements and medical examination.
60 million euros transfer fee?
A base transfer fee of around €60 million and a contract until 2026 with the option of a further season were last mooted. Casemiro, who has won the Champions League five times among other honours, comes to Old Trafford with the experience of over 500 competitive games for Real and 63 international caps for Brazil.
In January 2013, the defensive midfielder had moved to Madrid – initially on loan – from Sao Paulo FC. He has played consistently for the Blancos for seven years and was an important figure in coach Carlo Ancelotti’s team until the end. “He wants to take on a new challenge. We have to respect that,” Ancelotti had said on Friday.
ManUnited, bottom of the table for the first time since 1992 after two Premier League fixtures and only in the Europa League this season, are planning several more reinforcements in the final spurt of the transfer window. With Casemiro, an uncompromising, physically strong, but also playfully intelligent ball conqueror, the hoped-for reinforcement for the central midfield has been found – and a transfer of Frankie de Jong (FC Barcelona), which has been discussed for many weeks, is therefore no longer very likely.
