Carlos Sainz promises: Madring will have its own character!

Carlos Sainz reassures his Formula 1 colleagues about the new track in Madrid – as ambassador, he believes it will be “the best track in the world”

Will the new Formula 1 track in Madrid offer good racing or just become another generic street circuit among many? Williams driver Carlos Sainz is convinced that Madring in Madrid will have its own character thanks to the combination of street sections and fast, flowing passages.

The Spaniard was presented on Friday as ambassador for the new Formula 1 circuit, whose 5.4-kilometer layout was also showcased in an onboard video. He says he has reassured his Formula 1 colleagues that the track in his home country will definitely be something special.

“The drivers asked me about the track – about the corners, the layout,” he said. ‘I told them not to worry. I’ll do my best to help ensure the track delivers a good show,’ said Sainz.

“What I want from a Formula 1 track as a driver is that it has charisma and character, lots of corners that make it unique,” he says, comparing it to other tracks: ‘There are tracks like Baku that don’t have any spectacular corners apart from the castle section, but they have character – with the long straights and lots of overtaking opportunities, it’s spectacular.’

Sainz: Exactly what we drivers like!

“Then there’s Jeddah, which consists only of fast corners and is also spectacular. They’re all street circuits, but they’ve managed to develop character. And that’s exactly what I want from Madring – and that’s exactly what we’re achieving right now,” he emphasizes.

Sainz highlights the mix of a city circuit, where the walls are very close, and a more open section, which he says is “more reminiscent of a traditional European circuit.” “And that’s what we drivers love,” says the Williams driver.

“The last part of the track, with the steep corners and quick changes of direction, is exactly what we like and what you see on traditional European tracks. And this track has both: the open section and the narrower part with the walls.“

”Best track” & ‘best event’?

Located on the outskirts of Spain’s capital, at a well-connected exhibition center near Barajas Airport, Sainz hopes that Madrid can make the Spanish Grand Prix one of the best events on the calendar.

“Everything that will happen around it – concerts, fan activities – will really help the city,” he said. “I think we can have the best track in the world and the best event on the entire calendar.”

“There are 24 races, and Mexico, Miami, and Las Vegas are doing a great job, but I’m convinced that Madrid can beat them—and we’ll do everything we can to make that happen.”
