Cancer: Tennis pro makes diagnosis public

She is one of the world’s top doubles players and had a successful 2024. But now an Olympic medalist has reported a health scare.

Canadian tennis player Gabriela Dabrowski made her breast cancer diagnosis public at the end of 2024. The 32-year-old world-class doubles player announced on Instagram that she had postponed parts of her treatment in order to complete the past season.

Dabrowski reached the Wimbledon doubles final with her partner Erin Routliffe of New Zealand that summer and then won bronze in the mixed doubles at the Paris Olympics with Felix Auger-Aliassime.

“I know this will come as a shock to many, but I’m okay and will be okay,” Dabrowski wrote. There were first signs of the disease in the second half of 2023. At first, she was told not to worry. In September of last year, she and Routliffe won the doubles competition at the US Open.

Her outlook on many things has changed, Dabrowski wrote, explaining: “My perspective has shifted from, ‘I have to do this,’ to ‘I get to do this. With this perspective, I find it so much easier to find enjoyment in areas of my life that I previously viewed as a burden.” Earlier this fall, Routliffe and the world No. 3 in doubles won the WTA Finals title.
