Would Alphonso Davies not have been allowed to play in the international match against the USA due to an injury? At least that’s what his consultant claims. The Canadian association sees it differently.
FC Bayern paid dearly for the international break. Defender Dayot Upamecano returned from the French national team injured and will be out for weeks due to free joint bodies in his knee. Even harder hit was Alphonso Davies, the left-back defender, who suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in the game with Canada against the USA and will now be out of action for several months for the record champions.
After the Davies injury was announced, his agent Nedal Huoseh made serious accusations against the Canadian association and national coach Jesse Marsch. His client should not have played against the USA at all. “I was surprised that he started because he had said that he was not able to start,” Huoseh told the Münchner Merkur/tz in an interview.
Marsch should have “handled the situation better, it could have been 100 percent avoided,” the consultant continued. “Before his time in Canada, Jesse was a professional trainer at the highest level and should know that you shouldn’t take any risks with players when they tell you they can’t play.”
“Anyone who claims the opposite is wrong”
According to The Athletic, however, Davies himself has indicated that he is ready for action. He has informed Marsch that he feels fit enough and wants to play. Meanwhile, the Canadian Soccer Association has also rejected the criticism from the consultants. “The coaches and experienced medical staff at Canada Soccer are true professionals and have always put the safety and well-being of the players first. Anyone who claims the opposite is wrong,” said media director Paulo Senra, according to media reports.
Ultimately, however, Davies’ injury is irrelevant to Bayern Munich, as it can no longer be reversed. In the season finale, in which the German record champions are competing to win the Bundesliga and advance in the Champions League, Davies is an absolute key player.
