British MotoGP: Preview of Silverstone

MotoGP Silverstone 2018 Marquez talks about weather

This weekend sees MotoGP action at the Silverstone Circuit with the race taking place at 2 pm on Sunday 26th August. Marc Marquez has been having a great year but he will be glancing over his shoulder after Jorge Lorenzo’s recent winning streak.

Silverstone has been a place where plenty of MotoGP memories have been made, including the 2013 battle between Lorenzo and a then-rookie Marc Marquez. One of the biggest tests that the riders usually face at Silverstone is the unpredictable weather that is typical of the English climate. One day it is bright skies and no winds, the next minute it can be high winds and heavy rain. So it can be incredibly difficult to prepare for what will happen at Silverstone. Then there is also the added complexity if the weather changes dramatically during the course of the race.

Marquez talks about the role the weather can play at Silverstone

Marc Marquez reiterated this fact recently: “Silverstone is a fast, technical track but our bike has very strong points, and we’ll try our best there as usual. The track has been resurfaced, and that should be a good help in general for the performances; we’ll see if that’s the case.”

“After quite a long time without the chance to ride in the rain, Austria confirmed that we can be fast in wet conditions, and that’s very good in view of a race in the UK! At Silverstone, the weather is another opponent to take into account, but whatever the conditions, it’s a circuit that I like and where I was fighting for victory last year.”

Can Lorenzo catch Rossi and Marquez?

Lorenzo is in a great run of form and he is looking increasingly likely to overtake Rossi in the 2018 Standings. Whether either of them can catch the outright favourite Marquez is another matter but when the rain comes into play, it could have a significant impact on the results this weekend at Silverstone.
