The Milwaukee Brewers and the San Francisco Giants came into the bottom of the 6th inning of their Thursday matchup at the AT&T Park tied at 2-2. Josh Hader was the pitcher on the mound and he retired all the batters he faced. It was his first road game since the All-Star break when the reliever made national headlines because of homophobic and racial tweets he made in the past.
“You know, it was something that happened when I was 17 years old,”
“As a child, I was immature, and I obviously said some things that were inexcusable. That doesn’t reflect on who I am as a person today, and that’s just what it is.”
While fans in Milwaukee cheered him for the way he handled the situation, Hader was welcomed by boos from the Giant fan base.
“…I can’t control what they’re going to say to me.”
“I’ve just got to go out and focus on what I’ve got to do and that’s to get outs and help this team win.”
“Obviously I don’t like what I said back then and I obviously regret what came out, but we live and we learn as human beings. We’re not perfect. It’s how you learn from what you do and just become a better person from it.”
Milwaukee Brewers late rally
The game remained tied until the top of the 8th inning when Ryan Braun’s pinch-hit RBI single broke the deadlock. The teams added a run each, so the Brewers entered the 9th inning holding on to a 4-3 lead. An RBI single by Jesus Aguilar and a two-run home run by Travis Shaw increased Milwaukee’s lead to 7-3. The Giants managed to get two runs back, but it wasn’t enough.
“We had some chances at the end against some tough pitchers,” – Giants manager Bruce Bochy
Christian Yelich was the only player with three hits in the contest. They included his 14th homer of the season which originally tied the game at two. Travis Shaw’s home run was his 19th of the season. He still trails behind Aguilar (25) for the team lead.
One good news for the Giants was they got their third baseman back, as Evan Longoria made his long-awaited return from the disabled list, going 2 for 4. Longoria had been sidelined with a broken left hand after being hit by a pitch at Miami on 14th June.
