Boxing hopeful reaches for world championship crown

Rio Olympic bronze medalist Artem Harutyunyan is set to challenge title holder Shakur Stevenson. The Hamburg native wants to “shock the fans in his hometown” in Newark (USA)

German title hopefuls in the ring: boxing pro Artem Harutyunyan believes he is ready for the fight for the WBC World Championship crown in the lightweight (61.2 kg) division. The 33-year-old wants to “deliver a great fight” against the reigning world champion Shakur Stevenson (USA).

On Sunday night (2:30 a.m.), the Rio Olympic bronze medalist will be the challenger against the 2016 Olympic silver medalist at the Prudential Center in Stevenson’s hometown of Newark, New Jersey.

“I respect Shakur Stevenson as a champion, but I’m coming to shock his fans in his hometown,” said Harutyunyan, who was narrowly defeated by Frank Martin in Las Vegas a year ago. In Newark, the Hamburg native will be supported by his trainer and father-in-law Artur Grigorian, a former lightweight world champion.

Defending champion Stevenson was extremely confident: “I want to show the fans that I don’t really have to move. I can also sit in the boxing bag and beat you up. “
