After winning the title in Indian Wells, Iga Świątek was also the favorite in Miami. But the Polish player no longer has a chance of winning the title
The world number one Iga Świątek has surprisingly been eliminated in the round of 16 in Miami. The Polish player, who had recently won the opening match of the “Sunshine Double” in Indian Wells, lost to Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova 4:6, 2:6. “I’m disappointed because I thought I would play better here,” said Świątek after the match.
In fact, the 22-year-old had already struggled in the round of 16, losing the first set in a tie-break against Linda Noskova – the player she had already beaten at the Australian Open. Now she was eliminated one round later
Zverev and Koepfer in the last eight
German tennis pro Yannick Hanfmann missed out on reaching the round of 16 in Miami. After just 47 minutes of play, the man from Karlsruhe lost 1:6, 0:6 to Grigor Dimitrov from Bulgaria. A few hours earlier, fellow countryman Jan-Lennard Struff had also failed to reach the third round, losing 6:7 (3:7), 4:6 to Australian Alex De Minaur.
With Olympic champion Alexander Zverev and Dominik Koepfer, two Germans are now in the round of 16 in Florida. In the round of the last 16, fourth seed Zverev will play Karen Khachanov from Russia on Tuesday. Koepfer will also face a top Russian player from 5.00 p.m. when he takes on Daniil Medvedev.
Zverev had previously beaten Christopher Eubanks from the USA 7:6 (7:4) and 6:3. Koepfer defeated the 14th seeded Frenchman Ugo Humbert 3:6, 6:4, 6:3 after 2:14 hours at the hard court tournament
