“Big admirers of him”: West Ham loan Phillips from Man City

After passing the medical check, Kalvin Phillips’ transfer from Manchester City to West Ham United is now complete. The 28-year-old will join West Ham United on loan until the end of the season. This was confirmed by the Hammers

Kalvin Phillips moved from Leeds United to Manchester City for around €50 million in the summer of 2022, but was unable to establish himself there despite the encouragement of coach Pep Guardiola. The England international (31 caps, one goal) has not been able to progress beyond the role of a substitute at the Citizens, making just four Premier League appearances this season – he has only played 89 minutes in total in the league.

Phillips, who still has a contract in Manchester until 2028, was aware of his poor prospects at the treble winners. He had already pointed out last fall that he wanted “more playing minutes” but “obviously didn’t get them”. This is probably one of the reasons why he has decided to make a change

Financial risk

However, the financial conditions proved to be a sticking point, as they represented a not inconsiderable risk for the host club. The Guardian reported that City had demanded a loan fee of around eight million euros – on top of this came Phillip’s lavish salary, which is said to amount to 160,000 euros per week (that would be around 4.2 million euros for six months).

Now, however, an agreement has been reached and Phillips is moving to London on loan until the end of the season. “There’s always been a lot of speculation about my move to West Ham, so I’m really looking forward to getting started,” said the new signing, adding: “We’ve got an incredible squad here. If I can bring in the quality I know I have, I’m sure we can give the West Ham fans a lot between now and the end of the season.”

At sixth-placed West Ham, who are without a win in their last four competitive games, the strong running and tackling midfielder should have the chance to gain important match practice for the upcoming European Championship in Germany: “We have been big admirers of him for a long time and believe he will strengthen our team and provide competition,” explained head coach David Moyes.
