It was only six minutes into the prestigious League Cup semi-final when the sporting action quickly faded into the background. While attempting to push a cross over the goal line with a diving header, Tottenham Hotspur player Rodrigo Bentancur landed on his head and remained motionless with arms spread out on his stomach.
Although the Uruguayan was stabilized by medical personnel after about ten minutes of interruption and taken off the pitch on a stretcher with an oxygen mask on his face, from which he sent a first positive signal with a stretched thumb.
But after the game, there was uncertainty among those in charge about the condition of the 27-year-old, who had been taken to hospital for further tests. “He was conscious when he came off the field,” assured coach Ange Postecoglou, but could not yet give the all-clear: “We hope he’s okay.”

During the night, Bentancur himself provided reassurance. On the Instagram platform, he shared a selfie showing him next to his partner. Below it, he wrote: “All good, guys! Thanks for the messages! Congratulations on the win, guys!”
His Spurs had won the game 1-0 thanks to a late goal from Lucas Bergvall, inflicting only the second defeat of the season on Premier League leaders Liverpool. The second leg at Anfield, where the north Londoners will be looking to secure a place in the final, will be played on February 6 – possibly with Bentancur, although an official diagnosis and all-clear from the club is still pending.
