Becker has a battle of words with Kyrgios

The Australian tennis pro Kyrgios talks about the generation around Becker – the German legend doesn’t like the statements. An argument ensues

Three-time Wimbledon winner Boris Becker (56) has engaged in a battle of words with Australian tennis pro Nick Kyrgios (28) on social media.

“Nick has been making a lot of noise about tennis lately”, Becker said on the platform X, formerly Twitter: “Why is he talking about a sport he obviously hates”.

Kyrgios had previously commented on comparisons between stars from earlier times around Becker and the current generation. “The game was so slow back then,” the 2022 Wimbledon finalist told “The Athletic”: “I’ve looked at Boris Becker and I’m not saying they weren’t good in their day, but to say they would be as good now is absurd.” It is a completely different sport.

Becker questioned Kyrgios’ credibility in view of the fact that the Australian has yet to win a Grand Slam title. The eccentric professional triumphed in doubles at the Australian Open in 2022

Kyrgios: “They’re just facts “

“I’ve beaten Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray,” countered Kyrgios: “That’s why I think I have a bit of credibility”. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to realize that the Serbian record Grand Slam tournament winner Novak Djokovic would have dispatched Becker in his best years. “That’s not an attack. These are just facts,” said Kyrgios and also answered the question of credibility with reference to Becker’s prison sentence: As far as he knew, Becker was the one who had hidden assets.

Becker then wished Kyrgios a speedy recovery. He could not wait to see the Australian back on the court. The eccentric tennis star has only played one match this year due to injury. First a knee injury stopped him, then a torn ligament in his wrist. He has canceled his participation in the Australian Open in January 2024
