Monte Carlo – Germany’s tennis legend Boris Becker believes Alexander Zverev can win the French Open
“He can now work on his form again, play until he is in top form again and then maybe even win Paris,” Becker said in the Eurosport podcast “Das Gelbe vom Ball”. “Old enough he is, smart enough he is, talented enough he is.” The French Open in Paris, the highlight of the clay court season, starts on 22 May.
Zverev had won the clay-court tournament in his adopted home of Monte Carlo by beating Argentine Federico Delbonis 6-1 and 7-5 in the second round. The 24-year-old will face Spain’s Pablo Carreño Busta in the last 16 this Thursday.
Zverev’s task now, he said, is to get back on track after recent poor form and public criticism. “The good thing is that he also feels very comfortable on clay and that he also has all the chances now. The pressure is a bit off,” said Becker. He believes the expectation among Zverev himself and tennis experts now is not that he is one of the favourites to win the next big tournament. “Maybe that will do him some good.”
For the best German tennis player, the final in Montpellier is the only final so far this year.
