Champion Alba Berlin is running behind the music in the league, but now set the pace in Würzburg and won just like league leader Bonn in Oldenburg. Bavaria, the runners-up, have the small derby against Bayreuth ahead of them in the evening.
The Bavarians remain top of the table. On Sunday, the Munich team beat medi Bayreuth 83:60 (39:32) and have a record of 14:4 victories. It was the sixth success in a row for the Bavarians. The Bavarians went on a 14-0 run to lead 18-5 after five and a half minutes. Deshaun Thomas in particular got off to a furious start, scoring 13 of Munich’s first 21 points. After the hosts had lost their rhythm a little in the second quarter, they controlled the game again after the break.
Both teams had to cope without their head coaches. Munich’s Andrea Trinchieri took a break and handed over to Slaven Rimac, but followed the game indoors. Bayreuth’s Raoul Korner was ill and replaced by Mauricio Parra.
Berlin’s strong final quarter
Meister Alba Berlin, meanwhile, remains close to the top places. The team from the capital won 82:70 (38:40) at s.Oliver Würzburg after a strong final period and recorded their seventh away win in a row. The Berliners are now sixth, but still have games to make up. For Würzburg it was the tenth defeat in a row. Würzburg had built up a 40:38 lead at half-time thanks to advantages near the basket. The hosts maintained a narrow lead after the third period as well. However, a 10-0 run at the beginning of the fourth quarter turned the game around and the visitors dominated the final period with 32:15. National basketball player Johannes Thiemann hit the decisive three-pointer two minutes before the end of the game as the clock expired to make it 74-66.
Bonn pulls away with 19:4 run
The EWE Baskets Oldenburg remain winless under their new head coach Alen Abaz: The team from Lower Saxony lost 65:89 (34:38) at home against the Telekom Baskets Bonn. It was the third defeat under Abaz and the eighth in a row. Oldenburg remain bottom of the table. The visitors ended the third quarter with a 19:4 run and pulled away to a 63:48 lead before the final period. Bonn’s playmaker Parker Jackson-Cartwright confirmed his recent strong form with 25 points and thus contributed significantly to the Telekom Baskets staying close to the Bavarians in the standings.
