After a clear improvement in performance, FC Bayern München defeats German rival Alba Berlin in the Basketball Euroleague. The world champions can convince
FC Bayern München won the German duel in the opening game of the Basketball Euroleague with Alba Berlin. The team of the new coach Pablo Laso defeated the capital club on Thursday evening with 80:68 (36:44) after a clear increase in performance after the change of ends. The best scorer for Munich was Frenchman Sylvain Francisco with 17 points and Isaac Bonga with eleven points and ten rebounds. Louis Olinde and Johannes Thiemann each scored twelve points for Alba.
After the honouring of the German world champions Bonga, Niels Giffey, Andreas Obst (all FC Bayern) and Alba captain Thiemann, Bonga in particular confirmed his World Cup form. The 23-year-old was once again an unpleasant opponent in defence and also provided some accents with his distance throw. The Munich team won the first round 19:17. Thanks to ten points each from a strong Thiemann and Olinde, the Berliners were clearly the better team in the second quarter and went into halftime with an eight-point lead.
The Bavarians, who were now playing furiously, were able to close the gap with a quick 8:0 run and finally turned the game around after 25 minutes (50:46). The newly-formed Berliners looked overtaxed against the equally renewed Munich team. Frenchman Francisco led the Laso team to a clear 80:68 victory in the end.
