Bayern goes all-in: The background to the Kane poker game

FC Bayern are desperate to sign Harry Kane this summer, and now the financial chess game is in the home straight. The bosses are prepared to spend more than 100 million euros on the striker – and are optimistic.

A year ago, those responsible at FC Bayern at the time still thought they would be able to fill the gap left by Robert Lewandowski in a variable way and spread over several shoulders. The FCB decision-makers have known since the last second half of the season at the latest that this was a total misjudgement. Now Harry Kane is to be the successor to the Pole who left for Barcelona.

This Friday there will be the next negotiations, FC Bayern has made its next offer. the Munich club are also prepared to pay more than 100 million euros in transfer fees plus bonuses – in order to get close to the 117 million euros (100 million pounds including bonuses) demanded by Tottenham president Daniel Levy. Admittedly with a stomachache, but because the need is so great up front, also with full conviction.

Kane wants to join Bayern – he has emphatically stressed this internally.

So the ball is now in the Spurs boss’ court. Levy knows that his striker wants to move to the Isar, Kane has emphasised this internally several times – most recently also with emphasis. In addition, the Bayern decision-makers know that it would be difficult for Levy to convey internally that he wants to keep his captain for another year against his will and then lose him on a free transfer. For this reason, FC Bayern can now exert pressure in the negotiations and insist on a prompt decision. After all, the start of the Premier League is on the agenda in a week’s time and FC Bayern’s first competitive match is the Supercup against RB Leipzig.

For Tottenham, the last few weeks – and the tough negotiations with the FCB – were also about completing the otherwise desired transfers. If Spurs had already received the 100 million euros for Kane, the starting position or negotiating position would have been completely different – and possible transfers would probably have been much more expensive. This is another reason why Levy is said to have played for time.

The Bayern bosses are still optimistic that Kane can be presented soon as a top transfer this summer. There could be clarity in this exciting poker game as early as this weekend.
