Bayern do a “decent job” in the opener against Ulm

FC Bayern München started the new season with a victory. The title co-favourites and last year’s finalists beat ratiopharm Ulm 87:80 (39:39) at home on Saturday evening.

The best scorers for the 2021 Cup winners were Cassius Winston with 25 points and Nick Weiler-Babb (18). Freddie Gillespie (10) also scored in double figures. Juan Nunez and Joshua Hawley were the most successful for the guests with 13 points each. Coach Andrea Trinchieri’s team won the first quarter, but Ulm came back and went into half-time with a 39-39 lead.

But after the break, the home side, who had let a 13-point lead slip away in the interim, were more alert and more uncompromising in Munich’s Audi Dome and built a clear lead, which they could not quite hold on to, but in the end they won. “We did a decent job,” said coach Trinchieri to “MagentaSport”.

First win of the season for Hamburg

The Hamburg Towers, who gave defending champions Alba Berlin a tough 78-81 challenge in their season opener on Wednesday, celebrated their first win of the season at home. Kendale McCallum was the best scorer with 19 points in the 91:74 (52:32) win against Syntainics MBC from Weißenfels.

Telekom Baskets Bonn also got off to a good start in the new season. Point guard TJ Shorts II led the Rhinelanders with 22 points and seven assists to a 96-71 (53-35) win at Würzburg Baskets.
