The hope of a home match was not fulfilled for the German Tennis Federation in either the Billie Jean King Cup or the Davis Cup. For the German women’s tennis team, there will be a reunion
The German tennis teams have to play away from home in the qualifying rounds of the Davis Cup and the Billie Jean King Cup 2024.
The men’s tennis team will play in Hungary at the beginning of February, while the women will face Brazil again in April. This was the result of the draw for the traditional team competitions in Malaga.
The Davis Cup match in Hungary will take place on February 2 and 3 or 3 and 4. The men did not qualify for the group stage this year. Captain Michael Kohlmann’s team avoided relegation in the relegation play-off with hosts Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Kohlmann: “Tough task “
“Hungary is an interesting draw and a tough task at the same time,” said Kohlmann. With a view to Alexander Zverev possibly playing, he announced: “But we will travel to Hungary confidently and hopefully with a top line-up.”
After playing at home this season, team boss Rainer Schüttler’s women will play against the same opponent in Brazil on April 12 and 13, 2024. This means that the team has a long journey to make just before the home tournament in Stuttgart. The main field of the Porsche Grand Prix begins on April 15.
“We know the Brazilians very well from previous years and know that they have a strong team and an absolute world-class player in Beatriz Haddad Maia,” said Schüttler. Only the winning teams in the qualifying round reach the final round of the Billie Jean King Cup and play for the title in Seville at the end of next season. The losing teams will play in the relegation play-off
Kerber participation questionable
This season, the German women’s tennis team reached the final round with a win against Brazil in Stuttgart. However, they then had no chance in the preliminary round in Seville and were eliminated. Canada celebrated the title
The away trip to Brazil is likely to make Angelique Kerber’s participation more difficult. The Kiel native had held out the prospect of returning to the team in 2024. The three-time Grand Slam tournament winner will make her comeback after her maternity leave at the United Cup around the turn of the year and will travel with her daughter in the future.
