But 22-year-old Eva Lys was eliminated, losing 6:2, 6:7 (4:7), 3:6 to France’s Leolia Jeanjean.
The first Grand Slam tournament of the year starts on Sunday, with a total of eleven German tennis pros qualified for the event on the Yarra River. Alexander Zverev will face Dominik Koepfer in the first round. Jan-Lennard Struff, ranked number 24, will play Australian Rinky Hijikata in the first round
Angelique Kerber was unlucky in the draw. The three-time Grand Slam tournament winner, who is making her comeback on the big tennis stage in Melbourne after a one-and-a-half-year maternity leave, will face American Danielle Collins in the opening round. If she wins, Kerber (35) would then face the Polish world number one Iga Swiatek.
