Augsburg’s Strobl faces longer break

FC Augsburg conceded their fourth away defeat in a row with a 0:1 loss in Wolfsburg and remain stuck in the bottom of the table. In addition, FCA must fear the long-term absence of midfielder Tobias Strobl. Striker Florian Niederlechner also had to go off injured.

Strobl injured his right knee towards the end of the first half in a foul on Renato Steffen and could not continue. There was no exact diagnosis on Saturday evening, but the first assessments from Augsburg officials do not bode well. “It doesn’t look so good, especially with Tobi Strobl,” said coach Markus Weinzierl after the narrow defeat.

Manager Stefan Reuter also reckons the 31-year-old will “pretty definitely” be out, although he added: “As long as we don’t have a definitive diagnosis, I have hope. We have to clarify that.” Strobl is due to be examined on Sunday, with FCA set to announce the results on Monday at the latest.

I hope Flo will not be out for longer.

Things are apparently looking better for Florian Niederlechner. The striker, who only returned from a hernia last weekend, injured his left foot ten minutes after coming on as a substitute when, while trying to shoot, he hit not the ball but opposite number Sebastiaan Bornauw. The Wolfsburg player had to go straight out, Niederlechner about twenty minutes later. “He’s going all out and has hurt himself extremely,” said Reuter. “I hope Flo is not out for longer. “
