Augsburg’s assistant coach temporarily becomes Danish national coach

Lars Knudsen, actually assistant coach at FC Augsburg, can call himself Denmark’s national coach during the upcoming international break. The 47-year-old will be temporarily released by FCA

In January, Jess Thorup brought his compatriot Lars Knudsen onto the FC Augsburg coaching staff as standard coach, followed by his promotion to assistant coach in the summer. The 47-year-old will now receive a special honor at the beginning of September

Interim solution for the interim solution

The Bundesliga club has announced that Knudsen will be in charge of the Danish national team during the upcoming international break. The Augsburg assistant coach, who was also available to the Danish coaching staff as a standards expert during the European Championship, will act as an interim solution for the actual interim solution.

Following the resignation of Kasper Hjulmand, his former assistant Morten Wieghorst temporarily took over as national coach until the end of the year, but will now have to miss the upcoming international break due to illness. The Danes, who are still looking for a permanent solution until the 2026 World Cup, then contacted the FCA

FCA puts no obstacles in Knudsen’s way

“When the request came from the Danish FA, we didn’t think twice, but wanted to give Lars this interesting experience and responsible task,” explained Augsburg’s sporting director Marinko Jurendic. Knudsen was therefore “released for this activity for the phase of the secondment period at the beginning of September. His duties in Augsburg will be taken over by the rest of the coaching team during this time.”

Knudsen himself thanked “the Danish association for their trust in me and those responsible at the FCA for giving me the opportunity to work for the Danish national team during this phase, as they did at the European Championships in the summer. This is by no means a matter of course and I really appreciate it.”

The 47-year-old will then be on the touchline on September 5 and 8, when Danish Dynamite face Switzerland and Serbia in the Nations League
