Atletico Madrid’s stadium will no longer be called Wanda Metropolitano, but Civitas Metropolitano.
Club president Enrique Cerezo announced the change at a presentation on Tuesday. Namesake Civitas, a real estate and construction company, will also become the club’s “main sustainability sponsor” in the future. According to reports, the agreement will last for five years and will bring the club €50 million.
Until now, the stadium, which reopened in 2017 after an extensive renovation under the name Wanda Metropolitano, was named after the Chinese conglomerate Wanda. The addition of Metropolitano is considered reminiscent of the Estadio Metropolitano, a former stadium of the club.
