At his own request: Sergio Ramos leaves Sevilla after just one year

The return to Sevilla FC was a dream come true for Sergio Ramos, but it ends after just one season. The 38-year-old is looking for a club again

It’s official since Monday: Sergio Ramos and Sevilla FC are parting ways again after just one year. Because the defender no longer wanted to continue.

At least that’s what the Andalusian club’s press release says. “Sergio Ramos has informed Sevilla FC that he will no longer play for the club from Nervion next season, having fulfilled his dream of returning to the club where he trained as a player,” it said.

The Red & Whites have had a season to forget. The 2023 Europa League winners were even in danger of relegation at one point, finishing 14th in the final standings. Sevilla will start the new season with Francisco Jose Garcia Pimienta, as Quique Sanchez Flores will also be leaving the club. Garcia Pimienta will be the sixth coach since 2022, when club legend Jesus Navas will no longer play for Sevilla, whose contract was not renewed after a total of 19 years, much to the disappointment of the European Championship participant.

Sergio Ramos was not to blame for his fall from grace; despite a few slip-ups, he was still one of the better players. He scored seven goals in 37 competitive matches. Although his contract is coming to an end, it would have been perfectly possible to continue working with him.

There is speculation in the Spanish media that his departure is due to the rather bleak situation at the struggling Andalusians, who will not be represented internationally for the first time in a long time next season. However, the defender, who was born not far from Seville, is not leaving on bad terms. He will hold a press conference together with president José María del Nido on Tuesday at 11 a.m. to bid farewell to his training club

PK with the president on Tuesday – destination MLS?

Not everyone welcomed Ramos with open arms a year ago. Many still remembered his bumpy departure to Real Madrid in the summer of 2005. Until his return, he was regularly booed and sometimes verbally abused at the Estadio Sanchez Pizjuan.

But where will the journey take him next? We may find out more on Tuesday. Ramos’ brother and agent is said to have been sounding out offers from the MLS in the USA since the spring
