Adi Hütter greets AS Monaco from the place in the sun. This is not only due to the usually beautiful weather on the Cote d’Azur: after eight match days, Monaco are in first place ahead of Nice and Paris. In the big interview (Thursday edition), the coach talks about his first months in Monaco and offers from Saudi Arabia.
The Borussia Mönchengladbach chapter ended for Adi Hütter in 2022 after just one season, and he was unable to build on his successful time in Frankfurt (2018-2021). Six months ago, he looked back on this time in detail in an interview. After a creative year of break, the 53-year-old attacked again this summer.
Hütter explains his move to Monaco
Not as originally planned as a coach in the Premier League, but with AS Monaco. “Paul Mitchell, who built up an insane amount here, was still there and brought in a new sporting director in Thiago Scuro in the summer. They were looking for a coach who stands for aggressive, inspiring, attacking football. When it became concrete, I immediately said yes because Monaco is an exciting, big traditional club,” explains Hütter.
The Austrian rejected offers from Saudi Arabia
He resisted the lure of Saudi Arabia: “There were two offers from Saudi Arabia and one from the United Arab Emirates. But I wanted to stay in European football and work for a club that has high international ambitions. I listened to it, it wasn’t all wrong, but I wanted to make a difference at a club in Europe.” After a trip to England with his new consultant agency and some talks on the island, AS Monaco beckoned.
“At the beginning I thought: am I on holiday here? “
He was not to regret his move to the Cote d’Azur. From a sporting point of view, everything is fine, Monaco leads the table and has scored the most goals (21). But off the pitch, too, he feels right at home. The view from the training centre in La Turbie is breathtaking.
“From our three training pitches you can see out to sea, on nice days you can even look as far as Nice. When you drive down the serpentines to Monaco, it’s really impressive. At first I thought: Am I on holiday here? Or is this where I work? I don’t know if there are many more beautiful places to work in the world,” the coach enthuses.
