As a right-back: Wolf top candidate in Augsburg

Kevin Mbabu has returned to Fulham FC for the time being after his loan, Robert Gumny is not yet fit to play after tearing his cruciate ligament. FC Augsburg urgently need a right-back – and seem to have found him

“Of course we need at least one right-back, we are currently improvising here”, In the two test matches there, Henri Koudossou and Maximilian Bauer, actually a central defender, were allowed to try their hand. Thorup will also have to come up with something in this Saturday’s test against Leicester City in Kempten, possibly for the last time.

The 29-year-old has been under contract with Borussia Dortmund since 2018. In the meantime, he was loaned out to Hertha BSC and 1. FC Köln. However, he has been a permanent member of the Champions League finalists’ squad since 2021, but has now not been offered a new contract and is currently unemployed and on a free transfer.

The winger was born in Coburg, trained at 1860 Munich and made the leap into professional soccer at Eintracht Frankfurt and Hannover 96. Wolf played five international matches for Germany, making his first appearance in March 2023 under national coach Hansi Flick against Peru. Wolf can draw on the experience of 175 Bundesliga games, having made 22 appearances for Borussia last season. Wolf did not play in the Champions League final, which was lost 2-0 to Real Madrid.

Wolf’s offensive drive as a factor?

With his offensive drive, the experienced professional could provide FCA with impetus, especially down the right flank. Preferably in a back four, but also as a wing-back if Thorup wants to play with three central defenders at the back, which the coach does not rule out. A decision on the transfer should be made in the coming days. If it works out, it would close a big gap in the squad. “Then we’ll have a very good foundation,” Thorup also believes.
