Arsenal’s evening of big numbers

Liverpool and Manchester City had led the way in the championship race, Arsenal followed suit impressively in Sheffield Wednesday. With some impressive statistics

Their tickets would have been valid for the full 90 minutes of the game, but a few Sheffield United supporters left Bramall Lane after just fifteen minutes. They had had enough.

Gabriel Martinelli, a winger for Sheffield United’s Monday night visitors Arsenal FC, had already made it 3-0 in the 15th minute of the game, effectively deciding the match between the bottom club and the third-placed team in the league. But not only that. The Brazilian also set the stage for the extension of two remarkable series

When the final whistle blew at around 10pm local time, Arsenal’s 6-0 win made them the first team in English league history to win three away games in a row by at least a five-goal margin. First 6-0 at West Ham, then 5-0 at Burnley and now 6-0 at Sheffield Wednesday

United, meanwhile, set the ungrateful record of being the first team in English league history to concede at least five goals in four consecutive home games: 2-5 in the FA Cup against Brighton, 0-5 in the league against Aston Villa and again against Brighton. And now the defeat against Arsenal, which was already apparent after 15 minutes. Context that makes the early journey home for some fans a little more understandable

The goal difference speaks for the Gunners

It was an evening of big numbers at Bramall Lane, even really big numbers, but only one team could be happy about that. Arsenal’s goalscorers Kai Havertz and Ben White both scored big anniversary goals: the English defender scored the 10,000th goal in Arsenal’s history to make the final score 6-0. The German attacker had previously scored his 150,000th goal in the English top flight.

While the Blades remain in 20th place in the Premier League on 13 points – they are now eleven points off the safety margin – Arsenal drew level in the three-way championship battle with Liverpool (who only won in stoppage time) and Manchester City (who won the derby after falling behind): Reds 63, Skyblues 62, Gunners 61. The goal figures – of course – speak in favor of Mikel Arteta’s team. No team scored more goals (68) and conceded fewer (23)
