Another Award for Super Salah

Mohamed Salah has had the season all professional footballers dream of having.  Not only has he taken Liverpool to the Champions League final, the Egyptian has enjoyed tremendous success individually at Liverpool.

As previously reported on Sports of the Day, Salah has won the Premier League Golden Boot award this season, breaking the record for the number of goals scored during a 38 game season in the process.

Not only that but Salah has picked up the Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year, the PFA Players’ Player of the Year, the Premier League Player of the Season, the Liverpool Fans Player of the Year and the Liverpool Players’ Player of the Year award.

It’s little wonder, having been recognised as the best player in the Premier League, that Salah transfer rumours continue to dominate many of the newspaper headlines and speculation continues to persist of a potential move to Real Madrid following the World Cup.

However, prior to the Champions League final, which will be Salah’s final club match of the season, the forward has picked up yet another award.

Having picked up the PFA Fans’ Player of the Year award four times during the season, it was natural that Salah would win the PFA Fans’ Player of the Season award.  Football fans across the country had the opportunity to vote online for their top player this season and Salah won with an astonishing 89% of the votes.

David de Gea, Kevin de Bruyne, Eden Hazard, Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling were all in the mix to win the award but Salah was head and shoulders above them in the voting, winning by a landslide.  The shortlist is compiled by the members of the Professional Footballers’ Association and the winner is voted for by the fans of the league.  All four professional divisions in English football are included in the award, which started life in 2001.

Former winners include Steven Gerrard, Chris Bart-Williams, Brian Tinnion and Bobby Zamora, who scooped the award for their respective divisions in 2001 and many top players have picked up the award since.

In the Premier League, some great names have landed the PFA Fans‘ Player of the Year award, with Ruud van Nistelrooy, Thierry Henry, Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Kane among them.

Salah becomes the third Liverpool player to win the award but only two men have managed to do it in consecutive seasons.  If Liverpool can keep hold of their star man in the summer, the pressure will be on to see if Salah can reproduce his form of this season in the next campaign and win both individual and team honours at Anfield.
