Indian Wells – Angelique Kerber has won her first tennis match this year, advancing to the third round at the Masters in Indian Wells.
The former world number one defeated Qinwen Zheng of China 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Kerber had last won a match on the WTA Tour in October, also in Indian Wells. Since then, she has only played three more matches, all of which she lost, partly due to her Corona infection. In Indian Wells, she had a walk-through in the first round as the number 15 seed. She will next face Daria Kasatkina of Russia in the third round.
The Masters in the Californian desert is one of the most important tournaments on the WTA Tour. The hard-court event is endowed with 8,584,055 US dollars. Kerber reached the final in 2019, losing in the quarter-finals to eventual winner Paula Badosa of Spain at last year’s edition, which was moved to the autumn due to Corona.
