Ex-MotoGP rider Andrea Dovizioso crashed in a motocross and had to be taken to hospital – condition not life-threatening
Ex-MotoGP rider Andrea Dovizioso is mainly on the motocross track after retiring from the premier class at the end of 2022. Now the Italian has had a serious crash there of all places.
According to the Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, the three-time world championship runner-up crashed shortly after eleven o’clock on Tuesday on the Terranuova Bracciolini track in the province of Arezzo and suffered a head injury.
Rescue workers were immediately on the scene to provide initial treatment to the injured rider. However, Dovizioso was then flown to Careggi Hospital in Florence by rescue helicopter for safety reasons.
According to the report, the 38-year-old was admitted with the code three (differentiated urgency: stable condition with suffering that generally requires a detailed diagnosis and complex examinations). There is no danger to life.
As our Italian colleagues have learned, a CT scan was carried out on Dovizioso at the hospital. The result was negative. The former MotoGP rider is conscious. A fracture of the right collarbone and injuries to the ribs and hand were diagnosed.
Motocross was already his preferred training method during Dovizioso’s long MotoGP career. It has now become his main occupation
So he competed in the Italian Championship and recently took over the management of the Monte Coralli circuit in Faenza, which has been extensively renovated and renamed “04 Park – Monte Coralli” in reference to Dovizioso’s race number.
Dovizioso was a regular rider in the Motorcycle World Championship from 2002 to 2022. He won his only title in the 125cc class in 2004. He rode in the premier class for 15 years. However, he did not ride the entire 2021 season after taking a sabbatical.
He celebrated his greatest MotoGP successes with Ducati. The combination achieved 14 Grand Prix victories and 40 podiums together. From 2017 to 2019, he fought for the world title, but was beaten by Marc Marquez every time. In 2022, he finally retired six races before the end of the season
