RSC Anderlecht have signed Kasper Schmeichel, a prominent keeper. The 36-year-old was out of contract, which is why the deal was still possible.
In most countries, the transfer windows are closed. However, players without a contract can still join a club. RSC Anderlecht have now taken advantage of this and secured the services of Kasper Schmeichel. The experienced keeper has signed for one year with the traditional Belgian club.
“Although we are satisfied with the current squad, this was an exceptional opportunity to bring in a goalkeeper with so much experience and know-how,” Anderlecht’s sporting director Jesper Fredberg explained the move in the club’s statement. “Kasper can be of enormous value to this club with his experience on and off the pitch.”
The 91-time international and son of Danish goalkeeping legend Peter Schmeichel played his second World Cup finals as a regular keeper in Qatar last autumn. The long-time Premier League player once sensationally won the English championship with Leicester City. In 2022, the Dane moved from Leicester to France to join OGC Nice.
Competition in Anderlecht and from Union’s Rönnow
In the previous season, he had played 45 games for the French side across all competitions. In the end, however, both sides agreed to terminate the contract by “mutual consent”, according to a brief statement. At Anderlecht, Schmeichel will compete with Maxime Dupé, who was in goal for the first few games. The 30-year-old came from FC Toulouse this summer.
Schmeichel is currently in the circle of the Danish national team to prepare for the European Championship qualifiers on Thursday against San Marino (20.45) and on Sunday in Finland (18.00). Alongside Schmeichel, Union Berlin goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow (31) has also been called up to the squad for the two matches by coach Kasper Hjulmand.
