Anastasija Sevastova Loves New York, to Face Sloane Stephens in Us Open Quarter-Final

Anastasija Sevastova defeated 7th seeded Ukrainian Elina Svitolina to reach her third consecutive US Open quarter-final.

Third straight US Open quarter-final for Sevastova

Sevastova got the better of Johanna Konta at the 2016 US Open to reach her first ever Grand Slam quarter-final. She repeated the feat last season before losing to eventual champion Sloane Stephens and did it again this year by overcoming Elina Svitolina. Her quarter-final opponent? That same Sloane Stephens she lost to a year ago.

“I still remember that match from last year,”

“It was a good match — I lost, but still amazing memories.”

The Latvian needed three sets to get past Svitolina. The struggles in the second had her worried.

“It was tough in the second set,”

“The first set was so physical I was a little bit tired, she started playing better.”

Eventually, she recovered on the way to a 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 victory.

Svitolina’s loss leaves only two top 10 seeds in the women’s draw – Stephens (3) and Karolina Pliskova (8). Pliskova defeated Ashleigh Barty in the previous round but might not last much longer as her quarter-final opponent is Serena Williams.

Sloane Stephens needed a special invitation to participate in the 2017 US Open, which she entered as the No.83 player in the world. Not only did she shock everyone by reaching her first Grand Slam final, but she also became the lowest-ranked US Open champion ever. In the final, Stephens bested fellow American Madison Keys, becoming the first American woman other than the Williams sisters to win a major title since Jennifer Capriati and the first to win the US Open since Lindsay Davenport in 1998.

Stephens and Sevastova met in August in Montreal, a match the American won convincingly (6-2, 6-2). Anastasija Sevastova has three WTA career titles, none of them on hard court, so it’s easy to understand why Stephens is seen as the favourite.
