RB Leipzig have reached the last eight of the DFB Cup. The Saxons largely dominated the action against Rostock and prevailed as expected.
Domenico Tedesco’s Leipzig side, after the 2-0 win in Stuttgart in a 3-1-4-2 and with Henrichs for Silva (bench), immediately put their stamp on the game. After six minutes, RB had an easy game, Poulsen headed in undisturbed for the lead. Otherwise, Rostock defended well, but could hardly provide any relief offensively.
Because the Rostock side coached by Jens Härtel – after the 0:1 home defeat against Hannover with six new players (Riedel, Meier, Rother, Mamba, Ingelsson and Munsy) and arranged in a 3-5-2 – allowed very little, a one-sided game developed in which RB, however, had a problem.
Two aluminium goals for Leipzig
Leipzig could hardly find a way through. After a standard, however, the 2:0 almost fell – and with the second shot on goal. Only the post prevented Orban’s attempt from hitting the post (28.). The third Leipzig shot by Nkunku finally shook the crossbar (39th). So it remained 1-0 at the break.
Shortly after the restart, Klostermann failed narrowly with a volley (47th), after which Rostock came up offensively. Neidhart’s shot in particular was dangerous, but the joker’s finish fizzed just past the post (51). However, the Kogge’s brief period of pressure came to an abrupt end shortly afterwards.
Gulacsi excursion without consequences – Kampl saves
Nevertheless, Rostock held up better in the second half and even had the next big chance through Rother, because Gulacsi had played the ball into the feet of the guest player after a trip. However, his shot from the halfway line was cleared off the line (64th). RB did not challenge Kogge keeper Kolke again until minute 67, Nkunku failing from a free kick.
Dani Olmo needs only one minute
In the final phase of the low-scoring game, both sides were really dangerous: Ingelsson crossed instead of shooting from a good position, but Kampl saved from Munsy in the highest emergency (78.). On the other side, RB proved to be calm: Dani Olmo scored only one minute after his substitution after a counterattack to make it 2:0 (82.). This also meant the final score, also because Kolke saved late against Silva (90.+2).
Leipzig have not conceded a goal after three rounds in the cup – and are one of the favourites to win the DFB Cup after Bayern and Dortmund were eliminated. First, however, the Bundesliga continues. On Sunday (3.30 p.m.), Wolfsburg comes to town. Rostock receives 1. FC Heidenheim the day before (1.30 pm) in the Unterhaus.
