Amazon Prime Video has settled on its six live matches during the Champions League group stage – and justified the approach.
For the first time, five German clubs are taking part in the Champions League group stage, but two of them will play no part in Prime Video’s live broadcasts.
As in the previous season, the Amazon channel is allowed to exclusively broadcast one Tuesday match per matchday and has chosen Borussia Dortmund three times, FC Bayern twice and Eintracht Frankfurt once for this purpose in the group stage. Prime Video does not show live pictures of RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen.
“We try to pick the game that has the greatest relevance for most customers,” said Clemens von Thielmann, who is responsible for the football premier league at Prime Video, justifying the procedure. The focus is thus on the “big teams” like Bayern and BVB, as these appeal to the most people.
All other Champions League matches – with or without German participation – can be seen on DAZN. For Leipzig and Leverkusen fans who want to watch all their team’s matches live in the stream, this means: They can get through the group stage without Prime Video access at all.
