Altmaier misses third round at Australian Open

Of the German tennis men, only Alexander Zverev made it into the third round of the Australian Open. In round two, Daniel Altmaier was defeated by a French veteran.

Daniel Altmaier has missed out on reaching the third round of the Australian Open. The 26-year-old was beaten by the Frenchman Gaël Monfils with 5:7, 3:6, 6:7 (3:7).

This means that Alexander Zverev is the only German male tennis player still in the competition. The world number two reached the third round with a comfortable three-set victory against the Spaniard Pedro Martinez. Jan-Lennard Struff, Yannick Hanfmann and Dominik Koepfer had already been knocked out before Altmaier.

Monfils, 38, who recently won the ATP tournament in Auckland, is in the third round of Melbourne for the twelfth time in his career. Of the active players, only Serbia’s tennis star Novak Djokovic (17) has a better record in this statistic.
