Fernando Alonso explains what he wants from the right to review his penalty from China: Are the FIA stewards out to get the Spaniard?
A meeting of the race stewards has been scheduled for Friday at 8am in Miami to decide whether or not Aston Martin has gathered enough new and relevant evidence to warrant a re-hearing on the matter. Ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, Alonso did not want to go into too much detail, but says there are some important answers that Aston Martin is chasing.
In particular, the Spaniard wants clarity on why he was penalized so harshly for incidents in recent races. This includes the penalty he received for his defensive driving against George Russell on the final lap of the Australian Grand Prix, which triggered an accident.
Alonso: Spectators want to see fights like this!
“Obviously we have different opinions, but that happens in every sport,” says Alonso. “Even if you watch soccer on TV, depending on the team, there may or may not be a yellow or red card. I think we will always have different opinions as well.”
“But I think in China 99 percent of the people enjoyed the sprint and the battles, and I think I had the hardest penalty of the race. So maybe it was a bit confusing, but we’ll see tomorrow.”
Having been penalized in both Australia and China, it is important for Alonso that he and the team get answers as to why certain decisions were made: “The rules are the rules and we accept them,” he says.
“Sometimes we agree, sometimes we don’t, but we have to accept them because they [the stewards] have the power to make these decisions and they know the rules. But, as I said, I had the hardest penalty in the last two events in Australia and in China, so it’s good to make sure everything is OK and nothing else happens. “
