For five sets, Alexander Zverev and Jannik Sinner fought a duel on equal terms. In the end, the German celebrated his quarter-final berth
Alexander Zverev has reached the quarter-finals of the US Open for the third time in a row in a tennis thriller. The Olympic champion beat the slightly favoured Italian Jannik Sinner 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 after 4:41 hours early on Tuesday morning (local time). Zverev will now meet defending champion Carlos Alcaraz of Spain.
The 26-year-old from Hamburg and his opponent, who is four years younger, were plagued by physical problems in the course of the gripping match, which started at 27 degrees and with high humidity. In the middle of the fourth set, Zverev reported to the umpire that a spectator had said the “most famous Hitler sentence”. The man was subsequently escorted from the stands by security guards.
For Zverev, it is his tenth quarter-final appearance at a Grand Slam tournament, drawing level with Michael Stich. Only Boris Becker (23) achieved this more often in the men’s professional era as a German tennis player.
