Alexander Voigt to coach KFC Uerdingen

Regionalliga club KFC Uerdingen has appointed a new coach. Alexander Voigt (43) is to lead the team at the bottom of the table to a place in the league.

Voigt has signed a league-independent contract with KFC Uerdingen that runs until the end of the 2022/23 season. The 43-year-old knows the Regionalliga West very well, but was last without a club for almost eleven months after being released by league rivals Wuppertaler SV at the beginning of December 2020.

He himself played 30 games in the Regionalliga West during his playing days. The Cologne-born player also played 79 Bundesliga, 209 Zweitliga and 57 Drittliga games.

“For me, the team definitely has the potential to stay in the league,” Voigt said upon joining Uerdingen. “For that we need a clear order and game idea, but above all also mentality: I place – already in my time as a player – a lot of value on the team idea and cohesion. Without these virtues, we have no chance. We have to fight, the team literally has to have the knife between its teeth.”

Voigt’s debut is a tough one: the team is going to VfB Homberg – second from last in the table and thus a direct competitor in the basement. With a win, KFC can draw level on points with Duisburg. With only seven points from 15 games, Uerdingen are currently at the bottom of the table. In addition, a nine-point deduction is still looming after the club filed for insolvency proceedings in August.

KFC relieved Dmitry Voronov of his duties as head coach last Tuesday. Sporting director Patrick Schneider took over on an interim basis, and in Saturday’s match against Fortuna Düsseldorf II, the Krefeld side at least managed to pick up a point (1-1) after three defeats in a row.
