Alexander Albon “proud” of season start: More consistent than ever

While other teams are still waiting for updates, Albon is seizing the moment: With 20 points after five races, he leads the midfield – but for how long?

With another solid performance at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Alexander Albon continues his impressive early form in the 2025 Formula 1 season. The Williams driver is eighth in the drivers’ standings after five races and is currently the most successful representative of the midfield with 20 points. For the 29-year-old, this is more than just a statistical success.

“I think I’ve actually always been consistent – maybe that sounds a little selfish, but I don’t think my performance has ever been the problem,” Albon explains with a slight smile. “But now that the car is more consistent, I can really show that every weekend.”

In the past, Williams often had to rely on individual tracks or conditions to score points. This season, the tide seems to have turned. The package of drivability, efficiency, and race pace allows Albon to regularly compete with the faster midfield teams—often even with a slight advantage.

Albon: Williams is more consistent than Alpine and Racing Bulls

“What’s interesting for us is that when you look at the gaps to P1, we are the most consistent of all the midfield teams,” he analyzes. “Teams like Alpine or Racing Bulls occasionally have big swings, but we are very close every weekend – usually second or even fastest in the midfield.”

This consistency is no coincidence. Williams was able to start the season with a well-prepared car, while many of its competitors are still waiting for major upgrades. The tightly packed race calendar, with five Grands Prix in six weeks, plays into Albon’s hands. “Many teams haven’t brought their updates yet. That’s why it was important for us to get off the mark with a good car – that’s carrying us through this first phase.”

However, the London native also emphasizes how quickly the balance of power in the midfield can shift: “That’s the difficult thing about this season: we don’t know when the next team will make a leap forward. That’s why we have to take every opportunity to score points now – just like [on Sunday]. When everything doesn’t go perfectly, it’s especially frustrating.”

Despite these challenges, Albon is in a fighting mood – not least because his experience and clarity in dealing with performance development make him one of the key figures in team boss James Vowles’ project.

There’s no real break for Albon. “I’m flying back, doing simulator work straight away, then it’s off to Houston. It’s all pretty tight,” he says. “But that’s perfect for us right now. We want to make the most of this phase while we’re still up there in the midfield.”
