Alex Marquez: My brother “is now more the Marc from 2019 again”

Gresini rider Alex Marquez reflects on his time with Marc Marquez in the team and looks ahead to his new teammate Fermin Aldeguer

With the arrival of Marc Marquez in the 2024 MotoGP season, a team that otherwise led a rather shadowy existence as a satellite team came into focus. But with the eight-time world champion, that changed – not only thanks to a few victories and podiums, but also a special social media strategy.

The fact that it was a team of brothers, Marc and Alex Marquez, did the rest. In 2000, the two were to form a brother team before, back then with Repsol-Honda. But Marc Marquez’s serious injury prevented that.

In 2024, the situation was quite different for Gresini. Marc Marquez experienced the beginning of a second spring, in which the family atmosphere in the team and his brother Alex played their part. At the Sachsenring, the two even celebrated a historic double podium in MotoGP, with second and third places.

After the difficult years at Honda, it was a special moment for both of them. Marc Marquez in particular has really blossomed at Gresini, as his brother confirms.

“When the results are better, your character and mood change. That’s only natural. When you have a lot of setbacks, you tend to get down and it’s harder to stay motivated,” says the Spaniard.

“When everything goes more as you want it to, you’re just happier. You can see that change. Maybe he’s more the Marc from 2019 again, and that’s nice.”

When asked if Marc Marquez’s arrival has also helped the Gresini team to progress, Alex Marquez analyzes: “Every team tries to improve every year and get things even more under control. Marc has brought even more experience to the team, maybe a few different methods.”

“But as soon as I joined Gresini last year, I immediately realized that it is a super professional team. Every year they strive for improvement, and next year we will try to take the next step as a team.”

Then Alex Marquez will take on the role of team leader when Moto2 newcomer Fermin Aldeguer joins Gresini. “I won’t tell him any secrets. He’s not my brother. He’s my opponent,” jokes Marquez, when asked about his future teammate, who won eight times in Moto2.

“But all jokes aside, it will be super interesting to have a rookie in the team. As a newcomer, they have a fresh approach and can be fast in MotoGP with their experience in Moto2. I will try to learn from him too, because he is a super talented driver,” said Marquez.
