Alberto Puig comments on Honda crisis: concerns about Mir, praise for Marini

Honda team manager Alberto Puig looks back on a difficult MotoGP season in 2024, but is optimistic about the future: with a new test team and input.

The 2024 MotoGP season was disappointing for Honda: with only 75 points, the manufacturer finished last in the constructors’ championship. Particularly in the factory team HRC, the results fell short of expectations.

Joan Mir, MotoGP world champion in 2020, scored just 21 points and had ten retirements. The Spaniard’s many crashes also highlighted the difficulties Honda was facing. Even the satellite drivers Johann Zarco and Takaaki Nakagami performed better – a blow to the manufacturer’s reputation.

In an interview with MotoGP.com, Honda team manager Alberto Puig spoke about the challenges of the season and was self-critical: “It was not an easy year, that’s for sure. The results do not meet our expectations.”

“In the first part of the season, we tried out various solutions as a team,” explains the Spaniard. ‘In the second half, we then had a better idea of what works and what doesn’t work.’ Although there has been progress overall, it has been less than hoped for.

“Our engineers are getting a better and better understanding of how to proceed, and that’s important. But it will take time before we really see the results,” said Puig. Despite all the setbacks, however, Honda has never lost its will to come back. ‘This determination drives us, even though we are still behind.’

Many crashes for Mir, new input from Marini

The situation was particularly difficult for Joan Mir, whose performance suffered from the technical weaknesses of the RC213V. Puig expresses understanding: “Joan is already a MotoGP world champion. In the current situation, it is naturally uncomfortable for him because the bike is simply not at the level he needs.”

Puig explains the numerous crashes by saying that Mir, as a champion, is always pushing the limits to achieve results. “Things aren’t working out yet. But I hope he can keep his motivation up despite these difficult times.”

Luca Marini, who also experienced a difficult season as a Honda rookie, was able to score points with his analytical approach and dedication. Puig praises him explicitly: “Marini is very analytical and sets himself no limits. He could work 24 hours a day because he loves what he does.”

In addition, the team values his human qualities. “He’s a great guy. He is very polite and respectful. We are happy to have him with us.”

Strengthened test team and new signing Albesiano

Honda has high hopes for the upcoming season, as some personnel changes should bring new momentum. Experienced Aleix Espargaro will act as test driver for HRC. Puig was optimistic: “Aleix is still very fast and will help us a lot with his experience.”

Takaaki Nakagami and Stefan Bradl are also important members of the test team. “Taka is also fast, similar to Aleix. As for Stefan Bradl, he may not be as fast as the two of them, but he knows the bike and the team well. His work will help us find the performance we need.”

In addition, Romano Albesiano, an experienced engineer, will shape Honda’s development direction. Puig emphasizes that the team is counting on close collaboration in 2025. “With this test team, we look forward to a collaborative and productive season.”
