Alba overcomes tricky task

There were four games in the BBL today. Alba Berlin mastered the tricky task in Oldenburg, Ulm lost in Rostock, while Ludwigsburg won in Braunschweig. In the evening, co-favourites Bayern also celebrated a success against Chemnitz.

The German champions Alba Berlin remain unbeaten in the Basketball Bundesliga. On the third day of play, the capital city team won 89:81 (44:36) against the previously undefeated professionals of EWE Baskets Oldenburg. The best Berlin scorers were the national players Johannes Thiemann and Maodo Lo with 18 points each.

Co-favourites FC Bayern München also won their third game. The team of coach Andrea Trinchieri won against the Niners Chemnitz 88:74 (47:49). Augustine Rubit was the best scorer for the Bavarians with 22 points, while Marko Filipovity scored 29 points for Chemnitz.

Berlin coach Israel Gonzalez had to do without centre Ben Lammers and Yannick Wetzell, who were both ill, just 41 hours after the Euroleague win against Partizan Belgrade. In addition, the injured Malte Delow and Marcus Eriksson were still missing.

After an even start, Alba initially managed to pull away to six points. After that, the Berliners gave up too many offensive rebounds against Oldenburg’s physical defence, so that the hosts had second chances to score. They went into the second quarter with a 21:19 lead. The Berliners now defended more intensively and Thiemann turned up the heat. The centre scored 17 points by the break, eight of them in the last two minutes to make it 44:36 for Alba.

The decision was made in the third quarter. Alba dominated in rebounding, continued to defend well and now scored better from distance. Lo, in particular, now excelled. The Berliners pulled away to 18 points (70:52). In the final period, the Berliners then switched down a gear. Oldenburg tried everything again and came within seven points in the final minute. However, the Berliners managed to hold on to their lead.
